Cricket World Cup 2019 match no. 39 was played between Sri Lanka and West Indies at Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street which won by Sri Lanka with 23 runs. 21-year-old Avishka Fernando century had helped Sri Lanka to put a huge total of 338 runs on the scoreboard and Lasith Malinga’s 3 wickets had guided Sri Lanka to register a victory by 23 runs.
West Indies won the toss and decided to bowl first. Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera started Sri Lankan innings and built a good partnership of 93 runs for the first wicket. Dimuth Karunaratne (32 runs from 48 balls) lost his wicket to Windies captain Jason Holder. Perera played wise good inning and scored 64 runs from 51 balls which included 4 4’s, but unluckily he got run out.
Avishka Fernando built a good partnership with Kusal Mendis (39 runs from 41 balls) and Angelo Mathews (26 from 20 balls) which helped Sri Lanka to cross 240+ runs on the scoreboard. Fernando and Lahiru Thirimanne 67 runs partnership helped Sri Lanka to score 314 runs.
Avishka Fernando played matured innings and smashed his ODI career maiden century in the World Cup event. He had scored 104 runs from 103 balls which included 9 4’s and 2 6’s. Lahiru Thirimanne quick 45 runs from 33 balls which helped Sri Lanka to put a decent huge total of 338 runs on the scoreboard with the loss of 6 wickets. Captain Jason Holder had picked 2 wickets, as well as Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas, and Fabian Allen had picked one wicket each.
Chris Gayle and Sunil Ambris had started West Indies innings, but Lasith Malinga gave early breakthrough for Sri Lanka. He had played excellent innings and scored 118 runs in 103 balls with a notable strike rate of 114.56 which included 11 fours and 4 big shots. West Indies could manage to reach 315 runs with the loss of 9 wickets, and Sri Lanka had defeated Windies by 23 runs.
Experience bowler of Sri Lankan team Lasith Malinga had picked 3 wickets which guided Lanka team to register the victory. Kasun Rajitha, Angelo Mathews, and Jeffrey Vandersay also picked a wicket each.
The 21-year-old Avishka Fernando had been awarded Man of the Match for playing his wonderful century innings which helped Sri Lanka to reach a huge target.
